President's Message
The sun has one kind of glory while the moon and stars
have another kind. And the stars differ from each other
in their beauty and brightness,

Each and every one of us is a beautiful miracle to this
world. The special person you are is what makes people
love you, so love yourself and believe in yourself. Only
then will you be able to reflect your love unto others and
lead a fulfilling life. When all is said and done, no one
will remember that you scored a touchdown or that you
got all A's on your report card. They are going to
remember that special person you are inside and how you
treated others. Be proud of who you are and of your
family and community. They care about you and want to
see you succeed,

The RHS Talisman is a major publication taken on
each year to create a lasting record of our high school
experience. The work began in September with a
massive ad campaign to help cover the costs of the
book. The work continued daily until March, including
the scheduling and taking of hundreds of pictures in
hopes that some will be suitable for publication. Then
comes hours of designing and laying out every page
until we were satisfied with the results.
-152 pages of little blue picas,
-copy sheets to be typed,
-deadlines to be met,
-yearbooks to he sold,
-proofs to review,
-and anticipated delivery in June!
It has been fun to say the least!
A bit of advice to future Talisman Staffs: Get started
early; keep ahead of deadlines; guard the box of
finished pages With Your Life! (Our first mailing was
accidentally thrown in the garbage!) One other thing,
having some underclassmen on the staff would be
extremely beneficial.

The Student Council is an organization with representatb
from grades 9 through 12. They concentrate on doing activiti
beneficial to the school and the students. Last year the Studa
Council developed a scholarship fund of which money \q
awarded to a deserving senior attending college the folio'
year. This year the Student Council plans to continue the fi
and hopes to award an even larger amount of money.
Students Against Drunk Driving is an organization
dedicated to the prevention of underage drinking and the
problem of drinking and driving. The group works hard to
present students with positive alternatives to drinking.
This year SADD sponsored a guest speaker from National
SADD, they held assemblies throughout the year dealing
with drug and alcohol awareness. They were largely
responsible for the Red Ribbon Week held at school, and
they worked with elementary students to show them
refusal skills and safety. This past summer, RHS SADD
was represented at the National SADD Conference by
president Kristin Carbine,
Two Happy Key Clubbers!
When the Key Club was chartered in the fall of 1989, it was
really returning to RHS after an absence of several years. Once
open only to boys, the Key Club is now open to all students. It
is a part of an international organization dedicated to service.
Affiliated with the Kiwanis, Key Club emphasizes personal
growth, leadership and volunteer service. Although still very
young and growing, the current Key Club has been active in a
number of projects including ringing bolls I'nr the Salvation
Army, starting and maintaining a white paper recycling
program, organizing RHS's Teacher Appreciation Week and
waiting tables at a Christmas party for Senior Citizens. We
invite all interested students to join us to help improve the
world around us.

Mediation and Diversion are two programs that irtvol|
personal communication skills that are learned through th,
communication classes, Both are voluntary experiences aijj
can have very rewarding results, Mediation involves listen
ing to a family's problems and giving a teen's view of how ti
solve it. Diversion is an alternative route for teens that a^
first-time offenders of minor crimes. The offender is broug^
before a board of adults and teens alike and the board thg
decided what punishment the offender should receive. Sons
of the punishments involve community service or an essay oi

Surprise!
Membership in the National Honor Society is both an honor
and a responsibility. Eligibility is open to students in grades
11 & 12. Students are selected by a faculty committee.
Students must have a minimum of a 3.300 unweighed grade
point average, exhibit leadership, strong, positive character
and have performed both school and community service
activities. Members participate in service activities like
tutoring, bell-ringing for the Salvation Army, helping out at
nursing homes and various other activities.

Jets Club
JETS (Junior Engineers Technical Society) is a organizatio
open to students in grades 9-12. The purpose of the
organization is to familiarize students with careers in the
technical fields by way of field trips to visit technicians on
the job, speakers to introduce their specialty, and in-school
projects to promote interest in these technical areas.
The two highlights of our year include 1) participation in
the UVM Engineering Week Competition which involves
creating an egg drop device and/or popsicle-stiek bridge; 2) a
day t.iip to visit a college or university offering engineering
programs and a site visit to a technically related industry.

The RHS Science Club is an organization for students who
are interested in scientific fields of all kinds, such as Biology,
geology, physics and chemistry, the club participates in a
variety of activities including camping in the winter and
spring, taking trips to science museums, and visiting the
ocean. The RHS Science Club has also sponsored the Rutland
Science Fair for the last two years.

OMTI
Green Mountain Teen Institute provides the opportunity
for teens to learn about themselves and about alcohol and
ther drugs so that they can make informed decisions
regarding substance use. The program teaches skills
necessary for students to work and share this information
with their peers throughout school and community
activities.

The Art Club is a group of creative young people with a
great deal of talent, The club encourages its members to
work on their own projects throughout the year in order to
broaden their talents, During the year, many Art Club
members have their work displayed in places such as the
Chaffee Art Center Gallery or in exhibitions at Rutland
High School, At the end of the year the Art Club plans to
travel to The Fine Arts Museum in Boston.

Miss Fregosi was again the faculty advisor for this year's
Red & White, the RHS school newspaper, while Mr. Clark
helped publish the paper. Editor-in-chief Greg Crowther
headed up the student staff, while Jim Langan and Deborah
Sherman also provided editing help. The Red & White
covered school news thoroughly, including articles on
athletics, school clubs, special events, and student
achievements. Several issues also carried Holiday themes.
The newspaper was read and enjoyed by students and
faculty throughout the high school.

the games we prepared

Grande". A great deal of

goals with the preparation
for District, All New
England and All-State
Auditions.

finished for our cultural
trip along with Spring
Concerts, Fine Arts Festival Ensembles and the Vt. All-State Parade

Our year closes with Graduation Night as our fmal performance
with 11 members in the '91 graduating class and the annual Band
Picnic. To all of the seniors we wish them well and the best that life
has to offer! For the rest of us summer will be a pleasant diversion
before we start the whirlwind cycle again!!

Madrigal Singers
Madrigals and Chamber Singers are two separate groups
of musicians. In order to become a member you audition. The
Madrigal Singers is a smaller group than the Chamber Singers
and it tends to be more select. Both groups perform at the
annual Winter and Spring concerts. Along with that, they
perform at various events for the community. Most of the
Madrigal Singers audition for the various festivals each year
along with some Chamber Singers. Each year the Madrigals
put on a dinner Cabaret in the spring. Both groups sing
classical music and some more modern pieces . The class is
enjoyable because the music gives the student a way of
expression that no other course can give.

Concert Choir
What lovely sounds!
How very interesting! Whatever . . .
Concert Choir is a group of singers that perform at the
Winter and Spring Concerts at school. This years group was
quite large and they worked hard to give a good performance
at both events. The Choir sings a variety of music from
classical to more modern pieces. Taking a course in singing
gives the students a chance to work but at the same time
enjoy a relaxing acitivity. And the results of the hard work
show in the final performances at the concerts.

Tri-M Music Honor Society is a
group of musically talented high
school students. The three M's
stand for Modern Music Masters. To
become a member, each student
must pass a written exam, perform
a piece with their instrument of
voice and be formally inducted. The
students must also have a good
academic record and be active in
the music groups they belong to.
N.E. Band
The various festivals that are listed on these two pages
are exciting, fun and enriching experiences. Each student
who was accepted to one or more of these festivals worked
very hard to prepare for the required audi-
tion. Each student who auditioned bad to
prepare a solo or a quartet (for singing) and
audition before a judge who would base your
performance on your musical ability, sound,
and various other important factors of a good
musician. Once the audition is over all you
can do is wait to see if you be able to attend
the festivals. And once you find out if you
have been accepted the work tegins. You
must then learn all your music as best you
can before you actually go to the festival Any
person who gets accepted to these festivals
can look forward to a good time with lots of
new friends to meet, and good music to
participate in.

Cross Country
This year was a good one for the Rutland High cross-country running
team. The boys team began the year on a high note, taking 2nd place in
the Bellows Fall Invitational. The Raiders not only dominated most of
their southern Vermont opponents, they were competitive up north as
well.
The climax of the season was the State Championship meet. Among
the thirty-five boys teams from all divisions, Rutland placed 6th to
quality for the New England Championships.
The girls team was only 3 members strong with a freshman as their
top runner. The experience they gained this year will help them to
succeed in the future.

field Hockey
The 1990 Field Hockey season was the most successful
one in several years. The team reached the quarterfinals in
the State Tournament and played their usual highly skilled
game with great intensity. The Varsity lost in a thrilling, 2-1,
to the defending Division I State Champions, Spaulding,
seeded #1 in the tournament. The team had great speed,
excellent skills and lots of depth.
The Rutland Raider Field Hockey Program is very proud
of their CVGAL All-Stars: seniors, Sheri Moscatello and
Adrienne Domencucci and junior Theresa O'Connor. Also,
selected to the prestigious Vermont Twin State Team were
two seniors; Adrienne Domencucci and Captain, Sheri
Moscatello.

Soccer
Although the 1990 Varsity Soccer
Season was not a overwhelming
succesful one, we as a team look upon
this season as a stepping stone. Belong-
ing to the Marble Valley League was
quite a challenge for us, playing the
defending Division I State runner up
Mill River and three year consecutive
State Champions Fair Haven, all twice
each.
This team earned the respect of
their opponents and learned alot about
the game. I foresee the younger mem-
bers of the team as being a step ahead
of the other future varsity opponents
because of their playing experience
this season.

Football
An Outstanding Season
The 1990 Rutland football season was one of many accomplish-
ments for both the team and individuals. While going undefeated
at 10-0 and outscoring their opponents 297-50, the Raiders also
had many personal accomplishments. Quarterback Justin Mock
passed for over 1,000 yards and 12 touchdowns. His record as the
starting quarterback at the high school was 27-2. Running back
Jason Sweet also reached the 1,000 yard barrier and scored 115
points to lead the team in both categories. Although there were
many other bright spots for the Red Raiders, it was a team effort
that made the team so successful. The 16 seniors will be greatly
missed next year but they leave an outstanding tradition behind
that will challenge the senior classes to repeat in the future.

Cheerleading
Uarsity football Cheerleaders
Cheerleading has changed dramatically over the
years, and it's definitely changing for the better. This
year's Varsity football and basketball cheerleading
squads have helped make those changes. After two
years in a row of winning SVL champs, and second in
the state contest last year, they finally took the State
title on February 16, 1991. The State Championship
was well deserved by the basketball cheering squad
because they worked very hard to make their
performance flawless. Unfortunately, they are losing
six seniors, but we feel confident that Rutland's
cheerleading squads will continue to be successful in
the future.

The Rutland High School Boy's Basketball Team finished
their regular season schedule of a 16-4 record. The Raiders
returned four starters to their line-up from the previous
game. This team brought about some exciting and very
emotional games and they improved their record from the
previous year. The Raiders are now entering a post season
play. The Raiders have six lettermen returning from last
year's squad which finished their regular season 13-7. The
seniors brought experience to this year's quick Raider

Girls Basketball
This was a year of transition for the girls basketball
team, as new coach Lori Thompson stepped onto the court,
Returning almost all the players from last year's team 16-4,
the Raiders did not end up with quite as an impressive
record as this year's 14-16 but we're still seeded 7th in the
state tournament. Making it to the quarter finals for the
second straight year, although we lost, we still feel that this
was a successful year mainly due to our hard work and
determination. If girls basketball continues to improve as it
has over the past few years any goal or dream is possible.
We wish to thank our coach for her time and effort, and
best of luck to next years team!

Shiing
This year's cross country ski team has had a successful
season. With seven members on the girls team, we competed
strongly and were second in the league. We achieved our
team goals by closing the gap towards first. Individually,
members reached their own goals, broke into the top five, or
beat someone that they were seconds behind all season.
Having only three guys, we did not have enough to
constitute a team. Therefore they worked toward individual
goals. After overcoming bad weather, injuries, and illnesses
the team came out ahead. As a young team and having only
two seniors, the team shows much promise for next year.

After a very successful season last year the Girl's Ski
Team entered a transitional year. Although we didn't make
States, each individual skier reached a certain goal that was
put in front of them. The Boy's Ski Team on the other hand,
did very well. They ended up 5th in the state over all, with

The Ice Hockey team this season, aside from
illness and injury did fairly well. Some of the
memorable events this season were upsetting

potential to accomplish tasks that other classes have not, I hope to see

ftHS Welcomes Mr
For twenty-two years Mr. Gordon Kidd has taught science ... in England. Now he and his family have come to Rutland to live
for a year so that he can teach American students and, with his family, see the L'nited States.
Mr. Kidd is able to do this through a teacher exchange program, in which teachers trade countries, houses, and classrooms.
The American exchange teacher participating in the exchange is Mr, George Hooker.
Both Mr. Hooker and Mr. Kidd find some of the differences between England and America, For instance, Mr. Kidd is finding it
quieter and more spacious here. That is to be expected, though, since he lives outside a city which has the population of the
entire state of Vermont. He also finds it strange that good shopping can be long distances away.
How do American students compare with English students? Mr. Kidd says, "American students seem more concerned about
their schoolwork, but I don't think that they are necessarily more serious. They seem to like confrontation a bit too much." He
also thinks students here seem more confident on the surface.
Mr. Kidd, his wife Lorraine, and his daughters Suzanne, Melanie, and Danielle are looking forward to travelling in the States.
He hopes to see the desert, Yellowstone National Park, New York City and Disney world.
Mr. Kidd first became interested in exchange programs ten years ago. He knew it. would bring him to the United States, but he
had no idea where. He finds Rutland to be smaller than he imagined but says it is pleasant. His opinion of living here is ever-
changing, "but overall, I like it."
We would like to thank Mr. Kidd for giving us the opportunity to learn about a different culture and for sharing his knowledge
with us. The Rutland High School students that received classroom education from him were very fortunate to experience his
teaching style. After this year has ended we will have the memories of not only
what he has taught us about science, but also about us as a society. We wish
Mr. Kidd all the luck In the world in his future professional and personal
endeavors. We hope that he enjoyed his year at Rutland High School. We
greatly appreciated the honor of getting to know him.
